Integrated Care - evidence of savings AND better care
With Money in Mind - The benefits of liaison psychiatry
The integration of mental and physical services at one hospital has improved care and generated estimated savings of at least £3.4m per year, according to an NHS Confederation report. The report, which evaluated the rapid assessment interface and discharge (RAID) scheme at Birmingham City Hospital, said annual savings could be as high as £9.5m, with most of the savings coming from reduced bed use in elderly patients. ‘With money in mind: the benefits of liaison psychiatry’ said 67% of elderly patients were discharged to their own homes – offering the potential for savings in social care.
